Using Fm3 For IEM - I Finally Have Glorious Stereo When Performing Live
Have you thought about using your FM3 for IEM (in-ear monitoring)? I have recently moved from Kemper and I now have an amazing-sounding stereo feed for my IEM mix. The FM3 has given me a much better live sound in my ears. It is also so much easier to control the IEM setup.

Tico Tico Jazz Guitar - Dedicated To My Amazing Mum And Dad
Thank you for the tip!
It is simple, but effective!
It's important to note that if an audio track is not perfectly consistent during repeated sections, such as verses or choruses, or if it includes a "go to coda" in the score, syncing the score with the audio throughout will be unfeasible. This is because a performer may vary the timing slightly on repeated song sections. Therefore, even if the first verse is perfectly synced, subsequent repetitions may fall out of sync. A workaround is to create a new GP8 file without any repeats or "go to coda" sections in the score. The song should be written out completely from start to finish in an uninterrupted score. This approach may extend a 3-page score to 6 or 7 pages due to the absence of repeats. However, this method ensures that once completed, the score remains in sync throughout the performance, regardless of repeated sections. As of June 2024, GP8 does not offer the feature to mark audio sections according to the number of times they are played in the score. It would be beneficial if future updates included this feature. Until then, for songs with timing variations in repeated sections, the score must be laid out in a single, continuous sequence without repeats. You are welcome. 😋
Thank you for explaining this very important point. Repeated sections would certainly lead to inconsistencies with timing.
can u use the staff without the guitar tab?
Yes, that option is within the 'tracks' panel on the right. You can show or hide tab, standard notation, slash notation or numbered notation.
@@PaulHillGuitarist Thanks!
Great stuff! Could you please explain how to make a simple mono patch with 1 guitar and 1 mono aux return? Connections, blocks, etc.
Is this to have an IEM feed with guitar in mono?
@@PaulHillGuitarist both guitar and aux retunr in mono.
@@DarioRondini Add a mixer block to a new row (I used row 4), making sure it is to the right of the last block in your signal chain. Take a feed from the last block in your signal chain and feed it into the mixer block. Add an input 2 block before the mixer block and an output 2 block after the mixer block. The four volume and balance controls in the mixer block now control the volume and balance of rows 1 to 4. So long as your input 2 is set to "left only", you can feed a signal from a separate source into the mixer block via the input 2 jack socket.
@@PaulHillGuitarist Thanks a lot, I will try. Any problems with mic levels in input 2?
@@DarioRondini No problem with levels, but you can set the level via the I/O menu in settings and pad the signal.
Groovy!
Versatile little units aren’t they?
I'm only just scratching the surface of what this incredible piece of kit is capable of. It is my new obsession!
we're using a Behringer XR18 with a Splitter setup for our band (guitar/bass + vocals go to the splitter first before FOH ) we get a stereo feed back from FOH for the drum mix we can use apps to control our own separate stereo IEM mixes which is very cool , we just upgraded from mono to stereo IEMs this year , huuuge difference
I also have a feed from a Behringer XR18, although I only received a mono feed. Stereo does make so much difference in headphones and will make gigging much more enjoyable. Using the FM3's onscreen mixer is similar to using an app, although I am finding it much easier with physical knobs to turn. So glad I moved to the FM3!
@@PaulHillGuitarist yeah the xr18 only has 6 aux outputs, this can be extended somewhat thanks to the intranet connection, so our drummer has a headphone mixer attached there for a stereo mix, leaving 3 stereo mixes for our IEMs glad you're enjoying the FM3, it's a brilliant device
@@paulbradshawguitar The FM3 certainly is awesome. I just need a month off work to explore it. 😀
So much to learn with the FM3, although this IEM solution seems to be the way to go for me.
Wahey! Welcome to the club!
I couldn't wait any longer. 😀 Sounded great at the gig last night considering I haven't had much time to figure it all out.
@@PaulHillGuitarist It's only going to get better from here onwards too mate! Once you get your head around scenes, it really opens up the options. I'll send you some presets.
@@Tones_of_Jones Awesome, thanks! Last night was more of a find out how to best use the FM3 live gig. The power of the 3 switches is amazing!
I played my first gig with the FM3 last night. This thing is amazing! 🎸
I make some original music. Often I have difficulty saying what genre it is.. Sometimes I think, some kind of jazz. Sometimes I think I need to define my own genre for instrumental music that's melodic, improvised in part, and captures a singular feeling. Insightful video. Appreciate the brevity!
Being free of a specific genre is healthy I think. Music is music, so labelling genres can be restrictive.
Where is the Tab,,I don't get it?
The software allows you to transcribe. It doesn't notate the things you have worked out by ear.
Are you a jazz musician and do you agree with my thoughts? Please let me know in the comments. 👍
very helpful, thank you !!!
Glad it helped and thank you for leaving a comment. .
Easy Peasy lemon squeeze
Certainly is an easy fix. 👍
Sounds like the head from Cool Blues
Well spotted. That was the inspiration for this one. 🎷
Have fun jamming over the backing track!
Do you by any chance know how to make a chord into different voicings so you can put the stems of the notes in different directrions?
The easiest method is to open the 'Move/Swap Voices' window (in the tools menu) and move individual notes into a different voice. You can then adjust stem directions as required.
Very cool, Thank You!
Great to hear you enjoyed the video. 👍
Check out Anthony Wellington. Bass. Lyrical phrasing just like talking. Genius.
Thanks, I will check him out. 👍
I hope this video gives guitarists a different way to think about melodic phrasing.
I just accidentally stumbled upon your video and I have always thought that syncing real audio to tab would make practising my own music so much more effective. I didn't realize GP8 already had this capability all this time. Thank you sir for this tutorial! My life just got a little bit better :D
Great to hear you found the video helpful and even better to know that your life is now a little bit better. 👍
Gigging life is so much easier when using this awesome case.👍
Which one of them easy for bending?
I remember thinking the XS strings felt great to bend when I first tried them. My problem is that I am constantly switching between various instruments - steel string acoustic, bass, electric, classical, archtop, ukulele, etc., so it is difficult to give an answer to that question as I am used to quickly calibrating to whatever instrument I am playing. I also have .011-.049 gauge on my tele, so bending does require strong hands.
@@PaulHillGuitarist I see thank you for a quick response.
@@myhobbies8387 Have you tried either set? Both are great and you certainly won't be wasting your money if you already use one set and you try the other.
@@PaulHillGuitarist I tried the XS after 2 weeks the G B and E string turned black even I clean after I played. Wonder if Polyweb or Optiweb will last longer specially the G B and E string.
@@myhobbies8387 Give them a go. Optiwebs don't turn black when I use them, unlike the XS strings. In fact, I now keep a note of when I change strings as they do eventually break, although they still look fine up to that point, so there is no easy visual clue for when I need to change them.
Currently im using Elixir,im not yet try D'Addario before.Which one you recommend for, thanks.
I generally purchase Elixir strings after my tests as they do seem to last slightly longer. Both strings are great and you might prefer the feel of D'Addario XS strings. Might be a good idea to try them if you see a good deal. Let me know if you do and what you think. 👍
Glendale milled jack cups are the only way to fly
Looks interesting. Do they simply push in? There doesn't seem to be much information on their site.
Very nice! well done. 🙏👍
Thank you! 🙏
Tempates save so much time, so hopfully, this video will help other Guitar Pro users become more productive. 👍
So disappointing. Transcribe! doesn't transcribe anything. It's just the playback functions of any DAW. Big deal.....
The software doesn't claim to transcribe the music, it is a tool to help make transcribing easier. This is one of my most used tools for teaching and transcribing music. I find it to be an invaluable tool.
Thanks for this! I’ve been using nanoweb sim all my guitars for 20 years. I just put a set of d’addario KS on my tele, & it took me back to how great d’addario non coated strings felt. We’ll see about the life comparison. Guys-if you put a touch of alcohol in a cloth, wipe the strings hard pinching top & bottom w the alcohol, running the length of each string, zero gunk will build up, preserving the clean feel. Best to keep the alcohol off the fingerboard, cuz it’ll dry it out a bit. Works GREAT! I carry it w me always. I’m a session player in NYC
Thanks or the tip. I have microfibre cloths to help with keeping strings clean, although the alcohol idea could take this to the next level. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the D'Addario strings after you have used them for a while.
Is the track playing in video recorded using Dunlop super pot ? great playing btw!
Yes, that is with the new pot. Thanks for the comment about my playing. :)
@@PaulHillGuitarist Thanks for your reply, that's great tone , I just ordered the pots , can't wait to upgrade my strat real soon :)
@@tonebreakfast You won't be disappointed. My Strat is still noise free after a couple of years. I know that a regular pot would be causing scratchy issues by now if I had used one.
Transcribe! 1 license = 3 computers
I see you have found that information. I was just about reply to your previous comment, but you beat me to it!
What about the tension, elixir optiwebs feel like half a gauge stiffer than most uncoated strings to me, are the d'addarios any different?
I have always used heavier gauge strings and I play acoustic guitar quite a bit, so I tend to adjust to string tension. D'addarios did feel nice for bending, although I haven't used uncoated strings for many years, so I don't know how they compare. Give the D'addarios a go as they are great strings and you might prefer the tension.
Polyweb are the best
@@godbyone Do you prefer them to Optiweb and Nanoweb?
Hi Paul, thanks, loud and Clear; But... Do you know how I can chance the preset volume of iRealPro on the imported track??
The imported file is midi data that plays the instruments in Logic and any volume changes are controlled within Logic. Hit the "x" key on your Mac keyboard and the mixer will appear, from which you can adjust any volumes. Does that answer your question?
Thank you. Nice job of explaining audio file tracks. I followed along with a file and I have a question : I have imported an audio track (Penny Lane from the Beatles) into an existing score to practice bass and in the audio track each bar has been divided in12 sections (11 vertical dotted lines between each bar). Not sure why as the time signature is 4:4. If I import the same audio file in a brand new brand sheet, each bar is divided in 4 sections. That sounds normal. I haven't figured out how to control this divisions. It looks that GP8 is doing the decision by itself based on something I haven't figured out. Any idea?
Great to hear the video was helpful. The dotted divisions are created from the time signature. What happens to the divisions when you change the time signature of the existing score? As you change the time signature, the divisions should change.
I have a music book with paper pages with notes. Is there a device that can change them into tableture like a printer? Copy the page of notes and feed it through the printer and now it has converted into tab.
Not that I am aware of. This is something I have searched for previously as I also have written notation that I would love to be able to convert into an editable digital format. If you do find a solution, please let me know!
How do you turn the pages in long songs?
This is more for study purposes if you have an annoying thick book that decides to constantly close. All music books should have some sort of spiral binding so they open flat!
Interresting! I didn't expect to hear that big of a difference, and I really preferred the tone (in isolation) of the XS. The Elixirs sounded "harder", maybe a little "piezo"-like compared to the XS. BUT I'm not sure if I would have the same opinion in a thick mix. I think the hard attack of the Elixirs could help cutting through a bit, maybe. Or maybe not.. 😂 I'm an Elixir user most of the time - but they lack sets of some of the gauges I use, so I sometimes buy D'addario for some guitars, or buy single Elixir strings, which is expensive.. Curious to try the XS-series though! Thanks for the comparison!
Good to hear the comparison video was useful. Purchasing Elixir strings separately must be frustrating and as you said, expensive. All my recent string purchases have been Elixir. There are many more factors that change tone when playing live, so I have stuck with longevity when choosing the string type. I am interested to try XS strings on an acoustic guitar as Taylor has moved to recommending D'addario. I haven't been brave enough to try yet as I am very happy with the Elixirs and deciding to change strings just before rushing off to a gig is not the best time for that type of experiment.
ALWAYS let a fresh solder cool naturally. Do NOT blow on them.
Something I wasn't aware of. Why is this?
@@PaulHillGuitarist This will cause the solder to cool too rapidly, leading to crystallization and embrittlement. At least this is the way I was taught, and it’s always stuck with me. 🤷♂️
